Training Course on Corrosion and Coating

Carbon steel flat products are widely used in the building and automotive industries, in mechanical engineering and in consumer goods. Except for mechanical engineering, the steel is usually protected against corrosions by zinc or zinc based coating or by aluminization.

This course is designed to provide participants with the basics for understanding the fundamentals of corrosion and coating. The participant should be able to recognize the various forms of corrosion, what has caused the corrosion and be able to identify the best method to control corrosion.

* Introduction;

* Corrosion of metal and electrochemical considerations;

* The standards EMF series, influence of concentration and temperature on cell potential;

* The Galvanic series;

* Corrosion rates and prediction of corrosion rates;

* Passivity, environmental effects;

* Forms of corrosion;

* Corrosion prevention (Cathodic protection, principle, design and inspection)

* Surface Engineering – A conspectus, definition and concept, scope and applications;

* Introduction to electroplating and anodizing;

* Hot dip galvanizing;

* Corrosion resistant paint;

* The wear behaviour of chemical vapour deposition CVD and physical vapour deposition PVD coated tools;
