MISIF successfully concluded the “9^th Conference on Status and Outlook of the Malaysian Steel 
Industry” on 23, 24 June 2010 in the Holiday Inn Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor. The event 
was attended by 120 participants comprising of MISIF members, representatives from 
Government, financial and associated industries.

MISIF President, Mr. Chow Chong Long, in his paper on Status and Outlook of the Malaysian
steel industry noted that the ASC for Malaysia grew to a peak of 8.8 million mt in 2007 and 
declined 5% in 2008 in view of the Economic Recession. In 2009, ASC declined further 
registering 7.0 million mt in 2009 – a drop of 16%.

For 2010, Mr. Chow said that in view of various global factors, although the Malaysian steel 
industry is expected to register positive growth, it will be slower than earlier projected and ASC 
growth will likely be 3-5%.

The conference was designed to provide data on the performance of the Malaysian steel 
industry, while also reviewing developments among the ASEAN neighbours and also the steel 
giant, China.

The performance of the steel industry is recorded in the “9^th Report of the Malaysian Steel

1. MISIF holds 30^th AGM

MISIF held its 30^th AGM on 26 May 2010 in the MISIF premises. The meeting was significant in 
that it broke several records:

· There as the highest number of nominations for Council seats – a total of 17 
nominations were received for a total of 10 elected Council seats;
· It had the highest number of voters in that including proxies, a total of 97
member companies were involved in the voting process.Against a total membership of 125 
companies , this means that 77% participated in the AGM and voted for Council 
members;
· It also recorded the highest number of attendees at 53 companies represented by 59 
participants.

The meeting nevertheless, went through the meeting agenda :

· Confirming the minutes of meeting held on 1 June 2009
· Approved the Council Report and Statement of Accounts for year ended 31 December 2009
· Election of Council Members
· Appointment of Auditors.

The following members were elected into the Council:

· Bluescope Stee; Malaysia Sdn Bhd
· Hoto Stainless Steel Industries Sdn Bhd
· Malaysia Steel Worls (KL) Berhad
· Mycron Steel CRC Sdn Bhd
· Nicom Steel Centre (M) Sdn Bhd
· Southern Pipe Industry (M) Sdn Bhd
· Southern Steel Berhad
· Southern Wire Industries (M) Sdn Bhd
· Star Shine Steel Products Sdn Bhd

Following the election, the new Council members held an immediate council and the meeting
appointed:

· Mr, Chow Chong Long of Southern Steel Berhad as President
· Encik Azlan Abdullah of Mycron Steel CRC Sdn Bhd as Deputy President

At a further meeting of the Council held on 3 June 2010, the meeting agreed to appoint 
the following members into the Council:

· Amsteel Mills Sdn Bhd
· Megasteel Sdn Bhd
· Perwaja Steel Berhad
· Chairman of the Steel Pipes Group

The final seat is held open pending the formation of a Fabrication Group.
