MISIF successfully concluded the “9th Conference on Status and Outlook of the Malaysian Steel Industry” on 23, 24 June 2010 in the Holiday Inn Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor. The event was attended by 120 participants comprising of MISIF members, representatives from Government, financial and associated industries.
MISIF President, Mr. Chow Chong Long, in his paper on Status and Outlook of the Malaysian steel industry noted that the ASC for Malaysia grew to a peak of 8.8 million mt in 2007 and declined 5% in 2008 in view of the Economic Recession. In 2009, ASC declined further registering 7.0 million mt in 2009 – a drop of 16%.
For 2010, Mr. Chow said that in view of various global factors, although the Malaysian steel industry is expected to register positive growth, it will be slower than earlier projected and ASC growth will likely be 3-5%.
The conference was designed to provide data on the performance of the Malaysian steel industry, while also reviewing developments among the ASEAN neighbours and also the steel giant, China.
